What are National Occupational Standards (NOS)?
As an assessor, your role is to judge whether a learner meets a clearly defined standard. These standards often come from something called National Occupational Standards (NOS) — a fundamental part of regulated qualifications, including First Aid.
🧾 What Are National Occupational Standards?
- NOS are statements of the level of performance an individual must achieve when carrying out tasks in a specific job or role.
- They also include the knowledge and understanding required to support that performance.
🔍 Key Characteristics of NOS:
- They are National – recognised and used across the UK.
- They are Occupational – tailored to specific job roles (e.g. first aider, trainer, assessor).
- They are Standards – benchmarked expectations agreed by employers and industry experts.
🧠 Why NOS Matter to Assessors:
- NOS form the basis of many regulated qualifications and their assessment criteria.
- They help ensure that assessments are:
- Relevant to the learner’s role
- Aligned with industry expectations
- Transparent and consistent
- Understanding NOS helps you assess more accurately and justify your decisions if required.
✅ Example:
If you are assessing a learner for a first aid qualification, the assessment criteria may be directly mapped to NOS that describe what a competent first aider must be able to do and understand in real-life situations.
Reflection: Have a look at the NOS that relate to your subject area — can you see how they influence the content of the qualifications you deliver?
