Ultraviolet light

Flash burn is a condition that occurs when the surface of the eye is damaged by exposure to ultraviolet light. 

Both eyes can be affected and it may take a few hours for symptoms to develop and recovery can take a few days.

Common causes of this are prolonged glare from the sun, tanning beds and welding torches.

Signs and symptoms

  • Pain
  • Red and watering eyes
  • A ‘gritty’ feeling
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Blurred vision

Treatment

  • Put on gloves
  • Cover the eye/s with a sterile eye dressing
  • Take the casualty to hospital immediately or call for an ambulance
