Prioritising first aid treatment

Whether you are dealing with a single casualty with multiple injuries or dealing with multiple casualties you need to prioritise what and who to treat first and we prioritise our treatment based on the level of threat that each injury or condition poses to the casualty. For example, where a casualty is not breathing normally, we will need to prioritise their treatment over a casualty who has a suspected broken bone.

The order in which we prioritise treatment is as follows:

  • Breathing – deal with casualties who are not breathing normally first
  • Bleeding – deal with any major bleeding and treat the casualty for shock
  • Burns/breaks – treat burns and immobilise any bone injuries
  • Other conditions – treat appropriately

Monitor each casualty throughout providing first aid treatment as their condition may change at any time.
