Ultraviolet light
Flash burn is a condition that occurs when the surface of the eye is damaged by exposure to ultraviolet light.
Both eyes can be affected and it may take a few hours for symptoms to develop and recovery can take a few days.
Common causes of this are prolonged glare from the sun, tanning beds and welding torches.

Signs and symptoms
- Pain
- Red and watering eyes
- A ‘gritty’ feeling
- Sensitivity to light
- Blurred vision

Treatment
- Put on gloves
- Cover the eye/s with a sterile eye dressing
- Take the casualty to hospital immediately or call for an ambulance
