Allergens

In the United Kingdom, allergen labelling is regulated under EU law and UK law, specifically Regulation (EU) No. 1169/2011 on the provision of food information to consumers and the UK Food Information Regulations 2014.

  • Prepacked Foods: The 14 allergens recognised by EU law and UK law (cereals containing gluten, crustaceans, eggs, fish, peanuts, soybeans, milk, nuts, celery, mustard, sesame, sulphur dioxide/sulphites, lupin, and molluscs) must be clearly indicated in the ingredients list. This is often achieved by emphasising the allergen in the list (e.g., using bold, italics, or a different colour)
  • Prepacked for Direct Sale (PPDS): Information about the presence of the 14 allergens must also be provided for these foods. Foods that are prepacked for direct sale (PPDS) are required to have a label with a full ingredients list with allergenic ingredients emphasised within it
  • Takeaways and Food Delivery Services: Businesses must provide allergen information in writing before the purchase is concluded and at the point of delivery. This can be on menus, online, or in writing at the point of sale
