Most plants that grow in the UK are harmless and if eaten may only cause a mild stomach upset.

However, some plants are poisonous if eaten such as wild arum, foxglove, laburnum, ivy and mistletoe.

Something like the death cap mushroom, a fungus which is fairly common in most parts of the UK, is deadly poisonous.

If a potentially poisonous plant has been eaten try to identify it or a sample should be taken to the hospital for identification.

Recognition
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Abdominal pains
  • Diarrhoea
  • Seizures
  • Impaired responsiveness
Additional factors to consider when treating this type of poisoning:
  • Remove the source of poisoning away from the casualty and yourself
  • Retain a sample of the plant/fungus for identification by the emergency services
