The aims of first aid

As a First Aider, your priorities for the casualty fall into the following categories:

PRESERVE life
Providing treatment immediately and not waiting for professional help to sort it out for you.

ALLEVIATE suffering
Making the casualty more comfortable, reducing their pain levels and offering lots of care and attention.

PREVENT further illness or injury
Applying a secure sterile dressing on the injured part to control the blood loss and prevent the risk of infection, for example.

PROMOTE recovery
Treating the casualty for shock and ringing for an ambulance.
